Foods UI Students Can't Do Without

The University is a very exciting and challenging place. It is a place for the brave hearts really. One thing that is unique about Nigerian students is the strive for survival and no student can evade that. One of the challenges students in University of Ibadan face is eating good meals and it has been discovered overtime that there are certain foods students can't do without. A reoccurring cycle that cannot be avoided. These foods are rice, precisely referred to as concoction rice, spaghetti, noodles, bread, beans, garri (cassava flakes). For most students, it is practically impossible to go a week on campus without eating this food either solely or in combination. Well, these foods are not chosen by students because they are the most delicious, nutritious or appetizing but because they are low budget, fast and easy to make. In today's write-up, let's talk about rice.

RICE: Can we ever do without it?

Back in those days, in the days of our forefathers, rice was 'adored' and served once in a blue moon, especially on very special occasions such as Christmas. One is considered very rich if rice is a regular food in their home. Elderly ones, most especially our parents can relate to this fact. However, nowadays of no doubt, rice has become the main staple food. To some, it is an everyday food. Can a average Nigerian even go a week without eating rice? Think about it!. The question still remains, are there no substitutes to this food called rice? Why must each and every Nigerian base their diet on rice?

Students especially cannot deny the fact that rice cannot be avoided. It gets tiring but it is consumed anyways, most often, without any other options. The well-known 'concoction rice' is a lifesaver for famished students and it is easy to prepare. It is supposed to look like jollof rice- and depending on how it's done, it can manage to look like it. However, while jollof rice is made with love, the so-called concoction rice reeks of struggle and rush.

Majority of students rush to class everyday skipping breakfast, half of this students sometimes visit cafeterias during the course of the day and most of the time, what do they buy? Rice. It can be eaten as breakfast, lunch or dinner and it is availability in all restaurants and eateries cannot be overemphasized. Concoction rice has been proved to be a life saver to students and a solution to 'SAPA' most of the time.
