On July 3rd 2025, 28 years old liverpool and Portugal footballer Diogo Jota died in a fatal car accident in northern Spain along with his 25 years old brother, André Silva.

According to global news sources, the crash occurred around 12:30 a.m local time on the A52 motorway near Cernadilla in Zamora province close to the Portuguese border. The brothers were driving a Lamborghini Urus when a tyre burst while overtaking another vehicle and the car lost control leading to it swaying off the road and setting it on fire.

Emergency responders confirmed both occupants died at the scene and local media report the bodies were burnt beyond recognition and later identified by documents in the car.

Jota was on his way from Porto to the port city of Santander to catch a ferry back to England for pre-season training. He had recently undergone minor surgery and was advised not to fly prompting him to travel by road and sea.

The tragic crash came just 11 days after Jota’s wedding to his long-term partner Rute Cardoso.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the tyre failure, but early findings suggest it happened at high speed during an overtaking maneuver.
