RISING ANXIETY On CAMPUS

Anxiety is rising within the University of Ibadan community as several female students have shared unsettling encounters with a man whose behaviour has been described as suspicious and possibly harmful.

REPORTS From STUDENTS

The alarm was first raised on student platforms, where different students told strikingly similar stories. The man, who is reportedly tall, huge, and light-skinned, seems to focus on approaching female students using different tactics.

According to accounts, he often begins with unsolicited compliments about appearance or dressing.

FIRST ENCOUNTER

One student recounted:

"I was walking back from class with a course mate when he called out to us from across the road, complimenting my height. I thought it was just a random comment, but then he called us back. Somehow, we crossed over to meet him. He started saying strange things. At some point, I just snapped out of it, called my friend, and said, ‘Let’s leave here.’"

COVERING Up As a PREACHER

In another instance, the man posed as someone “preaching the gospel,” but witnesses strongly felt it was only a cover-up for more concerning intentions.

PERSISTENT ENCOUNTER Near ITEMS

Another female student described a persistent encounter near the ITEMS building. After complimenting her outfit, he allegedly tried to follow her as she walked away.

"When I noticed he was pushing the conversation too far, I tried to stylishly leave. But he followed me up the stairs until he realized I was going into a particular office. Later that day, I saw him again, this time engaging two other girls at Tech Walkway. It was then I knew it wasn’t just me, he is targeting multiple students."

STAY ALERT, STAY SAFE

From these repeated reports, it’s clear that this man’s approach changes depending on the situation, but the focus is always female students. His behaviour appears calculated and manipulative, often starting with friendliness, charm, or even religion.

SAFETY ADVISORY

  • Students, especially female students, are strongly advised to:

  • Be wary of unsolicited compliments from strangers matching this description; do not feel pressured to stop or respond.

  • Trust your instincts, if it feels wrong, it probably is. Leave immediately.

  • Avoid being isolated or followed.

  • Report encounters immediately to UI security and share with others.

Awareness and vigilance are key to ensuring students' safety on campus.
