In the history of the Fifa World cup, the ongoing men’s world cup in Qatar will be the first to feature female referees. Three female referees have made history to officiate at the Men's world cup.

Meet the three female referees


Yamashita Yoshim:

Yoshim, a Japanese referee added her name to the history book for officiating at Qatar 2022 world cup. She's making her second appearance at the world cup after officiating at the 2019 women's world cup in France.

She also took charge at the 2020 Olympic games held in 2021 in a game between the United States and Sweden.


Salima Mukansanga:

Mukansanga made history in Qatar by becoming the first African woman to officiate at a men's world cup match. The 34-year-old Rwandan was the fourth official during the France Vs Australia match. She has been officiating for Fifa since 2012.

Before the world cup, she had also made history to become the first female referee to officiate a match in the 65- year history of the African Cup of Nations ( AFCON).


Stephanie Frappart:

A French official made waves in the refereeing world, writing her name in the history books by becoming the first woman to take charge of a men's championships league match. She made history again after she was enlisted to referee at the 2022 World cup.

38-year-old Stephanie has a career lifted with first and in Qatar. She will continue to blaze in her career.

Having female referees at the men's world cup is a strong sign from Fifa and the authorities and the world is hoping the focus remains on their careers rather than gender.
